Dental crowns are restorations used to protect and strengthen a tooth weakened by decay, damage, or previous dental treatment. A crown fits over the existing tooth, fully covering it to restore function and improve appearance.
At East Coast Bays Dental, crowns are commonly used as part of a restorative approach that focuses on protecting remaining tooth structure and supporting long-term oral health. Each crown is custom-made to suit the individual tooth and bite.
A dental crown, sometimes referred to as a tooth cap, is a made-to-fit covering that is cemented over a natural tooth. It completely encircles the tooth, helping to restore its shape, strength, and function.
Crowns can be made from different materials. All-ceramic crowns are commonly used because they offer a natural appearance and are suitable for many areas of the mouth. The material selected depends on the tooth’s location, functional demands, and aesthetic considerations.
A dental crown may be recommended when a tooth is too weakened to be restored with a filling alone. This may include teeth with extensive decay, cracks or fractures, large or failing fillings, significant wear, or those that have undergone root canal treatment.
For suitable patients, crowns can strengthen weakened teeth, restore chewing function, and improve the appearance of damaged or discoloured teeth. Your dentist will assess the condition of the tooth, your bite, and surrounding teeth before recommending whether a crown is appropriate for your individual situation.
The dental crown procedure usually takes place over two appointments.
At the first visit, the tooth is carefully prepared to allow space for the crown. Impressions or a digital scan are taken so the crown can be custom-made to fit your tooth and bite accurately. A temporary crown is then placed to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being made.
At the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is checked for fit, comfort, and appearance before being cemented into place. Adjustments can be made to ensure the crown feels comfortable when you bite.
Caring for a crowned tooth is similar to caring for your natural teeth. Brushing twice daily, cleaning between teeth, and attending regular dental check-ups help support the longevity of dental crowns. Your dentist will continue to monitor the crown during routine visits.
