Free Dental Care for Teens

Free dental care is available in New Zealand for eligible children and adolescents under the Government funded dental benefits scheme, helping establish good oral health habits from an early age.

At East Coast Bays Dental, care is delivered by qualified clinicians in a supportive environment, with a focus on prevention, education, and maintaining long-term oral health.

Who is eligible for free dental care?

Free dental care in New Zealand is available for children and adolescents from birth until their 18th birthday as long as they meet eligibility criteria (see Health New Zealand website).

At East Coast Bays Dental we are contracted with Health New Zealand to provide free treatment for qualifying teenagers from School Year 9 up until their 18th birthday.

Up until the day before their 18th birthday, each teenager is eligible for free dental care regardless of whether they are by then in the workforce, studying at school or at university.

What does free adolescent dental care include?

Many dental services are available for teens including:

*Please note Orthodontics (braces) or orthodontic related extractions, teeth whitening or ACC claims are excluded from this scheme.

What to expect during an appointment

During an adolescent dental appointment, the dentist will assess teeth, gums, and overall oral health. This includes scaling and removal of plaque and tartar while providing preventative advice to support good oral hygiene and reduce the risk of dental problems as adult teeth develop.

Parents or caregivers are welcome to be involved during examinations and discussions if they wish. This approach is supportive and educational, helping young people feel comfortable and informed about their dental care.
